The NeoIntegrity Manifesto [March 2nd, 2010 | 10:01 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I found this quite thought-provoking, and just wanted to share it...
The NeoIntegrity Manifesto
by Keith Mayerson

1. Art should be reflective of the artist who made it, and the culture in which it is produced.

2. Art is aesthetic, and whether ugly, beautiful, or sublime, it should be interesting to look at and/or think about.

3. Art is not necessarily commodity, and commodity is not the reason to produce or appreciate art.

4. Art is about ideas, the progression of ideas, the agency of the artist to have ideas, the communication by the artist to the world of their ideas because agency and ideas are important and what art is.

5. Art communicates via its own internal language, and by the language the viewer brings to a work of art. But this language is not entirely textually based, and being an aesthetic object (or image[s], idea[s], comic, or happening[s]), the work communicates in such a way to be transcendent beyond language, and traditional constructs of textually based ideology. Therefore the work of art remains a deep communication between artist and viewer, and withholds the possibility of the sublime.

6. Art is rather than tells, it is about itself; it shows itself to be about what it is rather than being an illustration of what it isn’t.

7. Art is important because it reminds us that we are human, and ultimately, that is its function.

8. Art can be, and should be sublime, in that it is able to produce images directly from the mind and imagination of the artist, producing tangible realities from the fertile imaginings of the conscious and unconscious of the artist, triggering responses from the same in the viewer via form and light and color, that transcends language and received ways of looking at things, that, while ideological, comes closest to directly communicating from one animal to another in the most broad, base, but considered aesthetic language possible.

9. Art should be alive, have a life of its own, transgress intended meaning or hand or wit of the artist in that it arranges, via form, light, color, and space, other worlds that are optical and transmit cognitive reactions in the mind of the viewer that cause an ineffable schism between belief and reality that cause the work as to appear to be breathing life.

10. Art can indeed be windows onto other worlds, windows into the soul, able to capture dream space/time unlike any other medium because they are produced by the mind, gesture, hand and intellect of the artist, who consciously or unconsciously cannot hope to ultimately control the meaning, interpretation, or event described by the hand and mind of the unconscious.

11. Art should be experienced: a good work of art cannot be successfully reproduced or explained, indeed, that is ultimately the only reason art is important in the age of corporate commodity culture: it has an aura that cannot be contained-it is a result of a peculiar man-made alchemy that comes closest to recreating the soul.

Artists and Social Networking [February 14th, 2010 | 5:37 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Audio |Stripmall Architecture - "18 Minutes"]

So I was browsing lists online like 15 Places to Sell Your Work Online, 4 More Places to Sell Your Work Online, and 9 Free Online Portfolio Sites earlier and became a little overwhelmed -- I barely have enough time to keep up with my existing online presence in social media! How can I decide which sites to branch out to, *if* I should branch out?

I figured the best thing to do would be to ask my artist friends which ones work for them, and share a little about what's working (or not) for me.
DeviantArt - My go-to site. A Daily Deviation early on got me tons of exposure, so I can depend on having an audience. (Sadly because it was on one of my earlier works, not as much exposure as one would expect.) I also really like the Contest and News features, as well as the ability to Fav News Articles whenever one of my artworks is mentioned in someone's article. The Contests are also great. It has the most organized feedback system I've seen, detailed Stats for your gallery, and the ability to sort according to popularity -- something I often use to get a feel for which ones of my artworks I should be promoting more.

It also offers a Print Shop feature, which I used briefly but then stopped because I figured it would be cheaper on my patrons (and more profitable for me, since DeviantArt takes 50% of your cut) to create my own PayPal print shop.

Main Site | My DeviantArt

Behance - I just started this one earlier this month because I heard of quite a few people getting jobs through it. It seems to be a promising up-and-comer, but I haven't seen any results yet. We shall see.

Main Site | My Behance

Flickr - I'm not on this nearly enough to really take advantage of various contests I see floating around. It seems to be more of a "thing" with my photographer friends, as one can expect.

Main Site | My Flickr

Creativestem - Invite-only portfolio site. Small and tight-knit, I joined because a significant amount of artists I knew were on it. Perhaps because it's a smaller pool, one of my artworks ended up gracing the front page as a "Featured Work" for a few months? Other than that, I haven't seen much in the way of results thus far.

Main Site | My CreativeStem

MySpace - I actually got into 2 exhibitions via MySpace years ago in the pre-Facebook days, and it's still a pretty decent tool for me to contact some of my favorite musicians. Unfortunately, it's also long since been overrun with party publicists and other spammers as most of the real people flocked to Facebook. Still, I try to keep my blog there updated just in case.

Main Site | My MySpace

Facebook - Started out as a more personal friend-to-friend profile, and now hybridized into promoting my art as well. Perhaps I should create a separate group for my art? Not sure. It's good to keep my friends and various contacts up-to-date about my artistic happenings, as well as getting to know fellow artists better.

Main Site | My Facebook

Livejournal - Similarly to Facebook, it started off as a personal journal that has been mostly re-purposed for artistic matters. The journal provides a more exhaustive archive of art-related news than I can fit on my portfolio site, and the Friends-only entries features allows me to update those who are closer to me with non-art matters if I ever decide to write about them.

Main Site | My Livejournal

So artists -- which online portfolio/gallery/merchandising/sales sites do you use? What works, and what doesn't?

Dumpster of Love Art Party [February 8th, 2010 | 3:59 pm]
[Tags|, ]

One of my pieces will be on exhibit this Friday at the Dumpster of Love party. Hope to see you all there. :)

"The Blood Dumpster, a NYC-based art collective, celebrates another year of art, beauty and mayhem with a pre-Valentine’s bash in Brooklyn. The event, entitled Dumpster of Love, will bring together the creative class in Brooklyn with great drink specials - $3 Yuengling drafts and $5 Absolut cocktails, an all-night raffle and more creativity then may be legal in most states. The party is part art show that will feature many members from the collective’s wide range of visual magicians. Expect artwork on display from Melissa Dowell, Rebecca Memoli, Jeff Moore, Aubrey Roemer, Nate Bear, Laura Galbraith, Vincent True, Tim Kellen, Katelan Foisy and many more.

"The Blood Dumpster is bringing along a few artists of the musical persuasion for this one. Funk House DJs, Jason Orrell and Tobeytech start the night off right, leading up to Rhinostrich’s 8-bit inspired melodies, then on to Epileptic Peat, a bad ass 8-string bassist armed with an artillery of pedals, the band Skullbuggery, a sea shanty styled child of the Reverend Billy choir, and Belltone Suicide, a Massachusetts noise artist. Not to mention, an appearance of Memo the Clown! Dumpster of Love takes place Friday February 12th, 2010 from 9pm and lasts until closing, at TBD, 224 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Arrive early for free swag and to scoop up some raffle tickets, the prizes get only get better as the night goes on.

"Take the G train to Greenpoint, exit at India street."

Moths To The Flame [January 4th, 2010 | 11:11 am]
[Tags|, ]

I recently finished the cover for Astronaut Down's upcoming album, Moths To The Flame. It will be available on iTunes by January -- details to be announced as I receive them.

Moths To The Flame
Acrylic and Digital | BUY PRINT | iTunes | Amazon.com

The concept was pretty straightforward, harking to the album's title. Simultaneously, the client also expressed a desire to see a girl amidst an oppressive, scary environment -- with only a flame keeping the darkness at bay.

The flame is subtly drawn to evoke the shape of a phoenix -- a personal symbol I incorporated, and felt it wove into the evocation of the Dark Night of the Soul and consequent rebirth.

Luna-Sea [December 20th, 2009 | 10:31 pm]

A private commission of Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter. The client was very specific about the type of pose/environment for this piece, as the full moon and the tumultuous sea lends to her insanity.

I just noticed I made her hair look suspiciously like Rogue's from X-Men. Hmmm. My childhood obsessions are coming back to haunt me.

More new work coming soon!

Bury Me Alive [November 6th, 2009 | 12:48 am]
[Tags|]

Finally, a new painting. Sorry for the lack of art (and otherwise) updates. :( Life has been crazy lately. But I hope you guys enjoy!

We Are The Fallen

All I see is black and cold
As I try to pull you down
To the ground, the ground

You bury me alive
And everybody's got to breathe somehow
Don't leave me, die
Too consumed by your own emptiness and lies

My friend Ben's new band. :) Support them! http://www.wearethefallen.com

The butterfly is a classic symbol of rebirth after death. I thought it was appropriate, considering the history of most of the band members.

This and many other prints of my artwork can be found at my store: store.alicemeichi.com

Geekery Update [May 29th, 2009 | 8:29 pm]

[Audio |Skindive - "No More Good Guys"]

I recently found out that an article I wrote reviewing Sam Kieth's comic, My Inner Bimbo, was quoted on the back of the newly-collected trade paperback.

Naturally I was quite excited, as Sam Kieth has been one of my comic-creator heroes for about 14 years now since The Maxx first came out. :) Go and buy the graphic novel! It's totally worth it.
