| Drawgasmic: The Art + Illustration + Design Compendium |
[June 30th, 2010 | 11:50 pm] |
And another one! Except this one is in St. Louis! Wish I could be there, but I'm hoping my Midwestern compatriots will represent for me while I'm still on vacation in the Jolly Old. :) Five exhibitions for 2010 already.. Looks like a busy year. 2720 Cherokee 2720 Cherokee Street St. Louis MO 63118
"The Drawgasmic exhibition and book is an effort to expose, promote, and push forward the work of international independent artists, illustrators, and designers working today. We, as curators, are trying to create the sort of experience we feel is missing in the in the all to often pompous and institutionalized art world. An experience that combines the talent of hundreds of great artists with a mash-up of unique performances.
"We are excited to be able to document the entire collection in a quality, limited edition coffee table book. The book will exisit as a historical marker of the unique styles and concepts being created by living and working artists of 2010. This book is being released in conjunction with the exhibition in July 2010." Participants were asked to write an Artist Statement... Here's mine:
"Art is the alchemy of an artist's soul. Whether consciously or subconsciously, we strive continuously to turn our leaden mediums and concepts into gold." |

| Alice does a comic!(?) |
[June 5th, 2010 | 6:00 pm] |
So, this is my very first comic since I was 16. (And I didn't even finish penciling that one. No, it cannot be seen anywhere online and probably only exists somewhere in a basement in Michigan, never to be heard from again...)
This will be published in an upcoming graphic novel, Reading With Pictures, a benefit anthology used to promote the reading of comics in the classroom. It will be available in comic book stores around the country starting August 18th, or you can pre-order your copy now by E-mailing info@readingwithpictures.org or going to your local comic book shop and pre-ordering there.
I was asked to work on a 2-page splash layout that incorporated the concept of education in some way. Being that I'm not a writer and my husband is, I dragged him into it. We chose to go with a twist on the classical Greek myth, The Judgement of Paris, wherein the protagonist must choose what goddess was most beautiful between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite.

I'm a Greek mythology nerd, so I put a lot of symbolism in the designs of the goddesses.
Athena has her renowned gray eyes, but I also gave her gray hair (I loooove gray hair.) to emphasize her "wise" side. She's also wearing her Aegis, which is trimmed with olive leaves (one of her sacred plants). Her armor is a feminized version of ancient Greek armor, as she is also the goddess of war. Ironically.
Aphrodite is wearing one of her sacred flowers, the rose, as well as her famous Magical Girdle... that makes people fall in love with her. I did my research to depict what the ancient Greeks consider "girdles". I assume the fact that she wore it in a way to enhance her breasts had something to do with the "magical" qualities. She has strawberry blonde hair, as Boticelli depicted Venus, and sea-green eyes that are reminiscent of her birth origins.
Hera is wearing a fleur-de-lis brooch and crown (as she is the queen of all goddesses), as the lily that the fleur-de-lis symbolizes is one of her sacred flowers. Also, the fleur-de-lis has been used to symbolize power throughout history -- what better icon to represent Hera, who offered Paris rulership over Europe and Asia?
Lots of people I love and respect are in this book, including my former classmate and college floormate, the ever so talented Tintin Pantoja. I'm really happy to be included with such a fantastic bunch of artists. (Jill Thompson of Sandman fame, Raina Telgemeier of The Baby-Sitters' Club fame)
Pick it up to spread the comics love to the next generation! |

I'm participating in a Blood Dumpster show this weekend, themed "Pyrophilia". Details below in the awesome flyer created by Nate Bear and Laura Galbraith.
Appropriately, the piece I've chosen for this show is Ares. |

| Hadron Colliderscope cover rough sketch |
[May 26th, 2010 | 10:16 am] |
Things have been a little busy for me lately, which is why I haven't had any finished artwork to post yet. Once I have permission to post my most recently finished project, I will do so. :) However until then, here's a rough sketch of something I'm working on for my husband's ( redridcully) webcomic project, Hadron Colliderscope.

If you're in the NYC area and you haven't seen the NeoIntegrity: Comics Edition show yet... what are you waiting for??? NeoIntegrity: Comics Edition is an exhibition curated by artist Keith Mayerson that includes over 210 cartoonists, illustrators, animators, and fine artists who work with the spirit and power of iconographic languages. With creators young and old, historic, currently famous, and soon-to-be-famous, the exhibition is also about the community and legacy of iconographic art and its ability to productively influence the world.
Originally conceived as a utopic attempt to begin an art movement, the first installment of the NeoIntegrity show was held in the summer of 2007 at Derek Eller Gallery in New York City. That show incorporated over 180 fine artists, with some cartoonists and illustrators mixed in to breach questions of high and low, rarified and pluralistic. NeoIntegrity: Comics Edition takes the proposal a step further, showing the relatability of creators harnessing the iconographic vehicle to express themselves and to tell stories for a culture to understand itself in order for it to become a better place. So much talent and ~mythical legendary artistes~ in one place, how can you resist? Click here for: Details on MoCCA site
